| Will including cover letters really make a difference? Find out how much difference cover letters really make. Not everyone who forwards a resume sends cover letters. Not everyone gets the job either. These job candidates are missing the boat. Cover letters are a thrilling means for you to reach companies. This is your chance to tell the employer why they need to interview you. From the salutation to the end your cover letter must to be convincing. Advertisers and marketers write the best persuasive copy known and you can do the same. Some pointers used in advertising can make all the difference in getting an interview. No one appreciates being sent mail marked occupant or resident as much as seeing their own name on a letter. This same fact holds true for employers, they are people also. In order to be the most effective, your cover letters must be directed to a particular individual whenever possible and this is almost always possible. By performing some investigative work you can most always find the name of whom you should send your information to. If you find more than one name send each person a copy of your resume. When a job posting lists no individual’s name to direct your resume to, send a resume top that address and to the person’s name you have found. Sending more than one resume is not going to count against you. Make your first sentence stirring and explanatory. Explain how their job advertisement got your attention and inspired you to write. Write the same name of the title of the position and tell them you are interested and your resume is attached or enclosed. Instruct them about the file format of your resume if you are responding by email. The second paragraph is for creating a picture that allures your reader. You want to highlight your skills and abilities and show how they will work in the employer’s world. Make sentences about your skills using the same keyword the employer has used in their job advertisement. You can even include a short bullet list of your skills. Sentences should be limited to sixteen words and this entire paragraph needs to be less than ten sentences. Use the same keywords the employer is using to describe the skills they are seeking. These keywords are what the employer wants to see. Resumes are often scanned for these words and some also scan cover letters. You can repeat one or two of the accomplishment statements on your resume. Don’t worry about being repetitive. Think about how advertisers send us the same messages again and again. An optional third paragraph can discuss any of the desired or extra skills the employer is wanting. The posting might call these skills helpful. While these might seem like just the icing on the cake, the icing can be the reason someone wants the cake. Let them know you have everyone of these skills that you possess. Your final paragraph must contain a call to action to cause the employer to call you. Here is what you can do: Let them know you will be calling them to schedule a meeting to discuss their opportunity and learn more about what you might be able to do for them. You must create a sense of urgency to entice them to contact you immediately. Let them know you have a limited window of opportunity for an interview. Follow up letters are every bit as important as your cover letter. Follow up with everyone you have sent a resume to every week. Every follow up letter should have a different purpose and not one should be to find out if the position is still available or if you are being considered.
