Forklift Operators Should Be Adequately Trained |

| Looking at the statistics of injuries and deaths related to forklift accidents, which can be dreadfully alarming, don’t you think it is time we take some serious actions? Forklifts are essential in almost all industries, but they are also the most dangerous and deadly pieces of equipment if they are not operated properly. To prevent forklift accidents is within our reach, but to protect the employees, there must be strict rules, comprehensive training and an evaluation program provided. There must be a strict enforced policy which must clearly state that no unauthorized workers must operate a forklift. A comprehensive training, like OSHA training course, evaluation and certification must be provided for those employees who are authorized to operate forklifts. The OSHA training courses will emphasis on safe operations, hazards associated and the prevention problems that could lead to accidents. Apart from the above points a program must be designed for your facility that must include the following points: * Establish a safe traffic rule and speed limits * Assign and mark forklift lanes * Post warning signs around the premises * Insist every forklift operator wears seat belts * Drivers must yield the right-of-way to pedestrians, sound their horn at every intersection, corners, etc. * Train forklift operators are required to stay at a safe length behind another lift truck. * Drivers must slow down for turns and stay away from ramps or platform edges. * Drivers must learn the procedures that must be followed in the event of a tip-over. * Teach non-operators to work and move safely around forklifts. * Train drivers on how to raise and lower the loads correctly and loads must be positioned when traveling. A safe forklift operation can only happen if the operator is well trained. Operators must be trained to avoid the hazards associated with forklifts and to operate the truck safely under any circumstance. No forklift safety program can be complete without an accurate training component that will transform workers into highly skilled and safe drivers behind the wheel. The OSHA forklift training requirements stipulate that the operation training must consist of a formal instruction and practical training. The operator must be educated about forklift related topics like operating instructions, lifting capacity, vehicle inspection, and other operating limitations. The training should be conducted by skilled and experienced trainers. Most workplaces cannot do without forklifts but they can do without the accidents and injuries if the operators are well trained.
