| An eating disorder is an illness which affects all facets of each sufferer's life, is brought on by a variety of emotional factors and impacts, and has profound effects on the people suffering and their loved ones. In this article we will take a closer look at Anorexia and Bulimia. People who suffer from these illnesses have a low self-esteem and often an intense need to control their surroundings and emotions. Anorexia is a unique reaction to a variety of outer and inner conflicts, such as stress, anxiety, unhappiness and feeling as if life is uncontrolled. Anorexia is a negative way to manage these emotions. An Anorexia sufferer may be exceedingly sensitive about being overweight, or have a deep fear of becoming fat - though not all people with Anorexia have this fear. They may be afraid of losing control of the amount of food they eat, coupled with the craving to maintain strict control of their emotions and reactions to their emotions. This forces them to turn to obsessive dieting and starvation as a means to control not only their weight, but what they feel and how they act. Some also feel that they do not merit pleasure out of life, and will stay away from situations connected to pleasure, including eating. Common behavioral signs may include: obsessive exercise, calorie gram counting, starvation and restriction of food, self-induced vomiting, the use of weight loss medications, diuretics or laxatives to attempt controlling body weight, and a persistent concern about the way they look. Bulimia sufferers seek binge and purge episodes - they will binge on food in a comparatively short period of time and then use behaviors such as winning laxatives or diuretics or self-induced vomiting - since they feel overwhelmed in dealing with their emotions, or to punish themselves. This can be directly related to how they feel about themselves, or about a particular event or series of events in their lives. Those having Bulimia may seek episodes of binging and purging to avoid and let out feelings of anger, depression, strain or anxiety. Recurring episodes of quick food consumption followed by tremendous guilt and purging (laxatives or self-induced vomiting), a feeling of lacking control over eating behaviors, engaging in stringent diet plans and physical exercise on a regular basis, the misuse of diuretics or laxatives, and/or diet pills and a constant concern about the way they look can all be warnings of Bulimia. The two eating disorders have many similarities, the commonest being the cause. They are very complex emotional issues. Although they may seem to be nothing more than a dangerously obsessive body weight concern on the surface, for most people suffering from an eating disorder there are more profound emotional conflicts to be handled. |
