| As a professional in the alcohol and drug rehab field for over 30 years, I have found, in the last ten years, that more and more people are finding themselves addicted to opiate painkillers. Usually because they have had some type of muscular/skeletal injury or a dental procedure where the dentist has prescribed opiate painkillers. In both of these common examples, we find that most doctors and dentist do not warn patients of the addictive consequences of taking these drugs, like Vicodin or Percocet and the patients like the effects of these pills, but the outcome is more than they expected and usually more than they can handle. On one of the nations leading helplines, we get about half or more of our calls from people that are physically and emotionally addicted to these opiate painkillers. When questioned as to how their addiction started, they all have similar stories. “I had a severe accident and I was put on these drugs because I had severe pain. I no longer have the pain, but I can’t quit using these painkillers because of the sickness that accompanies my withdrawals.” Many of these people are in a position where they are force to buy drugs on the streets to keep from being “drug-sick”. Most also don’t know what to expect when they go into the withdrawal and they fear that they will be sick much longer than they actually will. If they aren’t on other drugs, it takes about 48 hours to withdrawal from opiates. The sickness will begin in the first eight hours and they will continually get worse until about eighteen hours into the withdrawal where they will have diarrhea and gut cramps, leg aches, a low fever and high anxiety. These symptoms are analogous to a severe case of the flu. These people will also be very anxious and more than likely they won’t be sleeping much. Even though the initial feeling is to go back to the painkillers or drugs that they were taking, or to take some replacement opiate, there is hope if these people only understood the nutritional basis of addiction. All addiction has a nutritional component because the metabolism of these drugs in the body requires large amounts of calcium and magnesium as well as many of the B vitamins. Sometimes people will call and say that they have been in opiate withdrawals for three weeks. This is impossible since withdrawals from opiates, as stated earlier, are a four-day affair. The feeling of being in a nutritional deficit after being addicted to opiates are similar to withdrawals, but they can be eliminated by taking the nutrients that will replace those that have been used up during the addiction. There are companies that make vitamins and minerals specifically for this problem and there are also companies that claim to make nutrients that work. It is important to know what brands and specific vitamins you need so that you don’t sustain this problem any longer than necessary.
