| Statistics revealed that its recycling rate had hit an all time high with approximately 40% of all waste currently being recycled. The increase has been attributed mainly to growing number of households taking part in food waste recycling. And at the heart of this new recycling bug is the increasing use of the kitchen caddy by homeowners in the area – a tool which the council introduced to its constituents in July. Ealing is now one of the many councils across the UK reporting increased use of the kitchen caddy. Leftovers from meals, out-of-date food and vegetable peelings are just some of the food waste that people are recycling via their kitchen caddy. It is little wonder that council officers across the UK believe the key to increasing recycling figures and reducing food waste over the coming years will be to encourage more people to take up recycling via their kitchen caddies. This increasing shift towards the kitchen caddies is now seen by many local authorities as a key device in driving up the recycling rates. Waste analysis from black bags has shown that approximately 30% of food still remains in black dustbin bags and council officers and waste management officers are keen to move this waste into caddies. The thinking is that the kitchen caddies will also serve as an educational tool. As people start to increasingly use kitchen caddies, many will realise what they are throwing away and consequently lead to a reduction in waste. For local authorities, food waste is a major problem. It currently makes up approximately a quarter of the average contents of a household refuse bin hence councils are already under greater pressure that ever before to reduce the amount sent to landfill. However, of greater concern to many council officers is the potential effect of food waste to the environment. Rotting food in landfill produces methane gas, the worst of the ‘greenhouse’ gases that affect the environment. Furthermore, charges and likely fines for sending biodegradable waste to landfill are increasing, putting extra pressure on council budgets. This all means that products such as kitchen caddies are now vital to the fight to tackle the UK’s recycling and waste management issues.
