| Millions of workers and employees head to work every day, without really knowing the difference between a potential risk and a potential hazard. However, it is absolutely vital that we understands these concepts if we want to lead safe lives. But how does one really make workers and employees more aware of their surroundings and the potential hazards and risks that dwell near them? In order to overcome this obstacle, the United States, Occupational and Safety Administration (OSHA) has developed and designed several courses to primarily help and aid workers to not only identify, but also assess and thus eliminate any potential hazards and risks that are associated with them. Next, one needs to understand the real difference between a hazard and a risk. This problem of ignorance can be solved with the help of a few simple decisions: 1.Firstly, an occupational hazard can be defined as, “a source of danger, that has the potential to cause serious harm, for instance, electrical wires, ladders and volatile chemicals”. 2.Secondly, a risk can be defined as, “the likelihood of someone being seriously injured or harmed by potential hazards”. But, in order to understand these terms a little better, we can analyze certain examples. For instance, an electrical wire can always function as a potential hazard. But, what if that electrical wire happened to be a live electrical wire, then the risk that is associated with that wire will obviously be much higher. In other words, there is a very high chance that if someone did touch the wire, he or she would experience a deadly shock. Overall, we can conclude that the process of risk assessment, must involve the identification of every potential hazard at the work site and the level of risk they may pose to the workers and employees. Fortunately, there is a regulatory body that has been established in the United States that aims to protect workers, employees and also ensures that every employer follows a certain number of standards and regulations, in order to protect employees, from any form of risk of potential danger. The regulatory, government body in question is The Occupational Safety and Health Organization (OSHA). Every occupational risk assessment procedure must begin with a mandatory walk-around of the workplace. Next the employees must be questioned, as to whether they themselves are aware of any lurking hazards. Once every possible hazard has been identified, they then need to be controlled, in order to ensure that they do not pose a high level of risk to the employees. But always bear in mind that these procedures and regulations differ drastically in every industry.
