| SEO or search engine optimisation is a difficult thing to get right but it is essential if you want to get traffic to your site, it need to be done carefully and methodically. Please be careful because there are a growing ammount of so called SEO companies out there but if they are any good, they should be ranking very high for their chosen key words. If you are looking to employ their service, ask them (and check) how they rank for key words. The first thing you need to do is to decide on the key words or phrases you want to use, I always ask my customers "what would you type in to Google to find yourself or your competitors and is this what your potential customers would type?" We then need to look at how competetive that key word is by using something like Google key word analysis tool, it will also suggest other key words or phrass you could use. So, you have decided on your key words based on the sort of traffic you are likely to get and we looked at the competition for that key phrase, so now what. Well, you will then need to completely optimise your site for these key phrases, which means changing not only all the meta data but also the content.You do not need to change the look and feel of your site, you simple change what it says and make it more search engine friendly for your chosen phrase or phrases. You need to ensure that the key words you have chosen actually appear a few times on the home page, this makes the key words relevent to your site, so how do I get it right? Start by looking at the hidden code and meta data that is in your site, try and clean this up if necessary and make changes to page titles, meta titles and meta key words. All the basic site information is usually contained in the head of your code on every page, this is what search engine “robots” see. They look at this meta information and then the written content within your site and so you need to ensure that your key phrases are contained in the meta data and page text. Failing to do this will result in the key word being completely discounted. But it is not as simple as that, we then have to look at key word density (the percentage that each phrase appears). This needs to be carefully balanced and not over done. Long gone are the day when you could put anything in the meta data and it will appear in search engines. When you are happy, you need to start indexing (listing your site on search engines) youe site, so that's it?..... We are done? Well far from it actually, our work really starts now, look at on page optimisation as the foundations of your site ! Now you have to start building on what we have created as doing on page optimisation only will not get you where you need to be. Off page optimisation is now becoming crucial to ranking well in search engines and this must be done carefully and methodically and you will start seeing some incredible results.
