| Safety is assured at Suvarnabhumi Airport and the scams of the old Bangkok international airport at Don Muang are pretty much a thing of the past. Many think that Suvarnabhumi Airport is just like on enormous shopping mall. The King Power duty free chain operates kilometres of retail here, literally. Anything from chintzy souvenirs to very fine jewellery stores including Swarovski Crystal. All the top international fashion designers have outlets here and there are great buys to be had on electronics. Watches, mobile phones and MP3 players can be bought for good bargains here and alcohol and cigarettes are available for very cheap prices also. The legitimacy of the goods on sale at Suvarnabhumi Airport is guaranteed – this is a very regulated and formal shopping area, not a Bangkok marketplace. Haggling and negotiating for prices is generally not accepted in the duty free stores inside Suvarnabhumi Airport. So, retail scams such as price hiking, foreigner pricing or the selling of fakes is not something that will trouble visitors to Suvarnabhumi Airport. For new arrivals here, this will make a difference from what they should come to expect once they enter Bangkok while people departing Thailand will no doubt enjoy the ability to buy with confidence, knowing that the goods are high quality originals and not fakes. The airport is quite safe with a few concerns regarding Bangkok transportation. A closure in 2008 when political protestors occupied the entire airport was not violent and since the roads to the airport and the entire terminals themselves were closed off there was never any danger of tourists being harmed while getting around Bangkok. The inconvenience of no flights arriving or leaving the airport this time lost billions of dollars to the Thai economy and its airport authority but was more than made back by the tens of thousands of tourists who remained in the city. Islamic unrest in the south of Thailand does not really affect the heavily guarded Suvarnabhumi Airport either thought there have been very sporadic outbreaks of violence in Bangkok. Mainly, security dangers related to this current trouble spot of the Thai experience is limited to areas in the very deep south of the country. Taxi touts are part and parcel of any trip to Thailand or anywhere in Southeast Asia for that matter. They are present at Suvarnabhumi Airport too, and will attack new arrivals with over-inflated fares to their downtown hotels. A lot of the victims of these touts are groggy from long flights, don’t understand the exchange rate and are also looking to get to their hotels as quickly as possible. This can all be avoided by booking inside the Arrivals Hall where private limousines and taxis can be booked and fares are fixed or prepaid. Tipping is at the discretion of the passenger and all passengers need to remember that highways and motorway tolls are their responsibility, not the driver’s. Booths out front of the airport will copy destinations onto duplicate carbon receipts and hand these to taxi drivers so this is a reliable method also.
