| Joe Carroll’s How to Get a Great Job in Ninety Days or Less stresses the importance of “It’s not what you know, but who you know.” To be sure, networking is critical to attaining a good job, because it always helps to have a list of credible associates and references. Networking preempts having to randomly send resumes to hundreds of companies. Instead, it is all about building relationships with potential employers. The more people you know, the greater the chances that a potential employer will call you to mind when an ideal job opportunity becomes available. While using the Internet is helpful, it is not recommended as the only, or best way to land a job. Many people will send out resumes via cyberspace and the majority of companies will not respond. This is frustrating for job seekers. Carroll proposes, “Many organizations will prefer to hire someone they remotely know who may be less qualified rather than someone they don’t know who is more qualified. We simply prefer not to hire strangers.” Trust is another issue, as employers want to hire those whom they know and trust. For this reason, many open positions often have the “In-House Referral” clause attached. It is only common sense to hire someone whose work has been observed and appreciated within a company. Another important networking rule that Carroll supplies to his readers is, “Career positioning requires that you get to know people in other organizations who will not hesitate in recommending you to people in their organizations.” Networking not only helps to build relationships between companies, but it also gives priority to the referred applicant. Considering that most employers have hundreds of applications to review, a referral can do wonders in enhancing your application—fast-forwarding it to the top of the pile. Another benefit of networking is education. That’s right; learning about a potential employer is crucial, especially in an interview. Networking can provide information regarding the history of the company, as well as important statistical information. If you can show that you’ve “done your homework,” it can weigh heavily when an employer is making his/her final decision. The best ways to network are through the local university, internships, conferences, meetings, and clubs that pertain to your field. For example, a college student has a tremendous amount of networking tools at his/her disposal. Through the university, a student can consult professors, partake in internships, and attend conferences and job fairs—in addition to peers and acquaintances that occur naturally in college life. Other important tools are social networking sites such as Linkedin and Facebook. It is becoming quite common for employers to seek information about a potential employee using Facebook in order to gain an unfiltered perspective on the applicant.
